Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
