British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
