Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
